Challenges Facing the Andean People

The Andean Mountains of South America our the home to some of the poorest and most underdeveloped communities in the Western Hemisphere. Andean people have a rich cultural history dating back 5,400 years ago. After being subjgated by the Conquistadors, they have endured centuries of poverty, violence, and social injustice. The Andean people live in rugged mountain villages and have difficult lives. Some of the most urgent problems facing the people of the Andes are listed below.


38% of the Peruvian population makes under two dollars a day

56.8% of the population has at least one basic need that is not being met, these include:
1. adequate housing
2. education
3. health
4. food & nutrition

42.1% of the population does not live in adequate housing, this includes:
1. physically inadequate housing
2. overcrowded housing
3. housing with out sanitation
4. households that have 1 or more children that cannot attend school
5. households where the head of the house has less than a primary education
.

48.8% of the population does not have access to suitable food, the reasons include:
1. a decline in the quality and nutrition of the food supply
2. a deterioration in the diversity of the national diet.
3. a decline in local food production.
4. an increase on dependency on foreign food aid.
5. lack of potable water
